What you actually get with the student discount

The 5% cash back, in full

This is the benefit most worth understanding properly, and the one where the gap between what Amazon publishes and what gets repeated online is widest. Amazon runs a dedicated terms page for it. Here is what it actually says.

Three of those deserve to be pulled out, because they change what the benefit is worth:

• The 180-day expiry. Cash back is not a balance that waits for you. Earn a few dollars in September and it is gone by spring if unspent.
• The $5 minimum. Combined with the expiry, small balances can expire before they ever become spendable.
• The $500 annual cap. Useful as an upper bound on what this benefit can ever be worth to you in a year.

Knowing the rules is one thing; actually collecting the money is another. Where the balance appears, and how to spend it before it expires.

One thing worth keeping separate in your head: this 5% is a membership benefit, not the rewards points an Amazon credit card earns. Those sit in a different balance with their own redemption routes, so working out the best way to redeem Amazon rewards is a separate decision from spending this one.

What is discounted, not included

Two of the listed benefits are discounts on paid subscriptions. They are worth having, but they are not free, and presenting them as included overstates the membership:

• Prime Video channels at $0.99 per month. Prime Video’s own catalog of movies and shows is included; channels are separate paid subscriptions on top. What the video benefit covers, and the question about ads.
• Amazon Music Unlimited at $5.99 per month. Amazon Music Prime, the smaller included tier, comes with the membership. The difference between the two.

And one that is limited in a way that is easy to miss: Prime Gaming’s Twitch channel subscription is one month during the trial period, not one a month for the length of it. Why that wording matters.

Two more inclusions carry qualifiers worth reading before you count them: grocery delivery from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods is available in select cities only, and Grubhub+ is genuinely included on Amazon’s own claim.

What is not included at all

Naming the gaps matters as much as listing the benefits. Two things we deliberately do not claim:

• Prime Reading. Widely listed elsewhere as a student benefit. It does not appear on the Amazon help page enumerating Prime for Young Adults benefits, so we do not state it as included. The reading question in full, and the same answer for Audible.
• Sharing with anyone else. Amazon is explicit that these benefits cannot be shared. Why, and what it costs you.

There is also a narrower benefit set during the trial than afterwards — Amazon says some benefits are withheld while the trial runs, without publishing which. What the trial does and does not include.

What this is worth to you

Whether the list above justifies $7.49 a month depends almost entirely on delivery. If you order regularly, free fast delivery carries the membership on its own and everything else is upside. If you order rarely, none of the extras rescue it — the case for skipping it is on the main verdict page and is worth reading honestly.
