The two separate things Amazon is describing

They get conflated constantly and they work differently. One is about delivery from Amazon's own pharmacy; the other is about prices at pharmacies you already walk into.

The chains Amazon names — Walgreens, CVS and Amazon Pharmacy — are its own examples rather than a complete list, and "60,000 pharmacies" is Amazon's figure rather than ours. We quote both because the specificity is the useful part: it is a number you can hold Amazon to, and it is checkable.

Why this is a student benefit and not a footnote

Two reasons, both structural. Student health plans vary enormously and many carry high out-of-pocket costs on routine prescriptions — the exact category a discount program targets. And the moment you move away for school is the moment your prescriptions stop being filled at a pharmacy your family has used for a decade, at prices somebody else was tracking.

Neither of those makes this a substitute for insurance, and we are not going to imply that it is. What it plausibly is, for some readers, is the difference between paying a list price at an unfamiliar counter and paying a discounted one. That is worth two minutes of checking.

How to check it against your own prescription

1. Have the exact drug name, dose and quantity in front of you. Savings programs price per formulation, so a near-enough answer is not an answer.
2. Look the price up on Amazon's pharmacy pages while signed in to the account carrying the membership.
3. Compare it against what you actually pay today, after insurance — not against the list price, which is the comparison that makes every discount look enormous.
4. Check whether a participating pharmacy sits near your term-time address before counting on the in-store side of the benefit.

If that comparison comes out in Amazon's favor, the benefit is real money to you every month. If it does not, nothing is lost and you can go back to judging the membership on delivery, which is where most of its value sits in any case.

What we deliberately do not state

• Any specific drug price. Amazon does not publish one on the pages we verify, and prices vary by formulation and location.
• How it interacts with your insurance. That is between you, your plan and the pharmacy.
• Which 60,000 pharmacies participate. Amazon gives three examples and a total; it does not publish the list on this page.
• Whether it beats a competing discount card. We have not verified those, so we do not rank them.

That list is longer than the benefit description itself, which tells you something about how much published coverage of this subject is invented. Our sourcing standard is the reason this page is shorter on claims than most.
