Amazon Music: what is included and what is not

Amazon lists them as two distinct lines. We keep them distinct here, because the difference between them is $5.99 a month for as long as you are a member.

Why the naming causes so much trouble

Two products, one brand, and a suffix doing all the work. "Amazon Music Prime" is the tier that ships with a Prime membership. "Amazon Music Unlimited" is Amazon's full streaming subscription, sold separately to anyone, at a lower rate if you are a member.

A search for "student discount Amazon Music" almost always turns up pages saying music is included. That statement is true of one product and false of the other, and the pages rarely say which. The practical consequence is people signing up expecting a full streaming service and finding the smaller tier.

We flag this the same way we flag Prime Video channels: as a discount on something you still pay for, not an inclusion. The full benefit list uses the same marking.

What we can and cannot tell you about the two tiers

Amazon's Prime for Young Adults pages name the products and the member price. They do not enumerate catalog sizes, on-demand rules, offline downloads or shuffle restrictions for either tier, and those details have changed more than once across the industry.

• We do state: Music Prime is included, Music Unlimited is discounted to $5.99 a month for members, and ad-free Prime Music is named among the trial inclusions.
• We do not state: how many songs each tier carries, whether a given tier allows on-demand play of any track, or how downloads behave offline.

The arithmetic worth doing

Suppose you would pay for a full music subscription anyway. Music Unlimited at the member rate costs $5.99 a month on top of the $7.49 membership — call it 13.48 a month for the membership and full-catalog music together.

Compare that with what you are paying now for music alone. If a standalone service costs you more than 13.48, the bundle is genuinely cheaper and brings delivery, video, 5% cash back and Grubhub+ with it. If it costs less, keep what you have and take Music Prime as a small extra.

The same test applies to every other Amazon subscription a student is offered — channels, Audible, Kindle Unlimited, the video-only membership. All of them, ranked for a student, with the ones you already have marked as included.

What happens to music when the membership ends

Music Prime is a membership benefit, so it follows the membership. When Amazon converts you to regular Prime at $14.99 a month, you keep the same music tier at the higher membership price. If you had added Music Unlimited at the discounted rate, that is a member benefit too — check what it becomes when the discount ends.
