Finding and spending your cash back

The 5% is the benefit people understand least, and the part they understand least is not how it is earned - it is how it is spent.

By Stephen V.Updated

The short answer

Cash back appears 24 to 48 hours after delivery, on a dashboard at amazon.com/prime. You need a $5 balance before you can use any of it, it is applied at checkout before tax and shipping, and it expires 180 days after it is earned. Those three rules together are why small balances often quietly disappear unused.

The rate itself — 5% on eligible items — is the part everyone quotes. The rules below are the part that determines what it is actually worth, and almost no other page publishes them. The complete terms table is on the benefits page; this page is about using the balance.

Figures on this page checked against Amazon’s own pages on — Amazon's cash-back terms page. How we check.

Where to find the balance

  1. Sign in and go to amazon.com/prime. The cash-back dashboard sits within the Prime membership area.
  2. Expect a delay. Amazon states cash back appears 24 to 48 hours after delivery, so a purchase made this morning will not show up this afternoon.
  3. Check the earned date on each amount, not just the total. The expiry clock runs per amount earned, not on the balance as a whole.

That last point is the one that costs people money. A balance of $5 is not a single pot with a single expiry date — it is a set of amounts, each 180 days old at most. The oldest ones go first, silently.

The three rules that decide what it is worth

From 5% cash-back terms, checked August 11, 2026.
RuleWhat it saysWhy it matters
Minimum$5 balance before you can spend any of itBelow that, the balance exists but is unusable.
Expiry180 days from the date it is earnedCombined with the minimum, small balances can expire before they ever become spendable.
Caps$100 per purchase, $500 per calendar yearAn upper bound on what this benefit can be worth in a year — $500, and only if you spend $10,000 in eligible categories.

Run the middle row through a realistic case. You earn 5% on a $40 pair of headphones in October: $2. That $2 sits below the $5 minimum, so you cannot spend it. If you buy nothing else in an eligible category before spring, it expires. The benefit paid you nothing.

The fix is not complicated: keep an eye on the dashboard, and when the balance crosses the minimum, use it on the next thing you were buying anyway. Treat it as a coupon with a deadline rather than as savings.

What it can and cannot be spent on

Amazon applies the balance at checkout, before tax and shipping. It is never applied retroactively to an order you have already placed. And it cannot be used on three things:

  • Gift cards
  • Digital content
  • Prime membership fees

That third exclusion catches people out. You cannot pay your $7.49 membership fee with cash back you earned from the membership. It has to be spent on ordinary purchases.

There is also a returns rule worth knowing before it happens to you: if you return an item you earned cash back on, the cash back is reclaimed. If you have already spent it, Amazon deducts it from the refund as a "Points fee". So a returned purchase can produce a refund that is smaller than you expected, for a reason that looks like an error and is not.

Which purchases earn it in the first place

Five categories, named by Amazon: Beauty, Apparel, Electronics, Personal Care, Personal Computers. Eligible products carry a badge on search and detail pages, so you can see before you buy rather than guess afterwards.

It is calculated on the final price after any discounts, and it excludes shipping fees and taxes. So a $100 item reduced to $80 earns 5% of $80, not of $100.

Notice what is not on that list: books, groceries, household goods, anything course-related. The cash back is not a general student discount and treating it as one leads to disappointment. What the student savings actually are.

One more thing Amazon says about all of this

It reserves the right to change the categories, the caps and the percentage at any time without notice, and describes the program as a limited-time offering. That is not a reason to ignore the benefit, but it is a reason not to build a budget on it.

We re-check these figures every 90 days for exactly that reason. If a number on this page has moved, it moves here in the same edit. How the re-verification works.

What happens to it when the membership ends

The cash back is a member benefit and the expiry clock does not pause for anything. If you are approaching graduation, turning 25, or thinking about canceling, spend the balance first — it is far easier to use $5 of cash back than to argue about it afterwards.

What happens when the discount ends covers the conversion, and how to cancel covers the exit. Do the spending before either.

If a balance you expected simply is not there, work through the published reasons a benefit will not apply before assuming a fault — the badge requirement, the delivery delay and the $5 floor account for most of them.

Common questions

Where does the cash back go?

To a cash-back dashboard at amazon.com/prime once you are signed in. Amazon states it appears 24 to 48 hours after delivery.

Why can't I spend my cash back?

Almost always the $5 minimum. You need at least that balance before any of it can be used at checkout.

Does the cash back expire?

Yes, 180 days after it is earned. Each amount has its own clock, so a balance is not a single pot with a single date.

Can I pay my membership fee with cash back?

No. Amazon lists Prime membership fees among the things it is not redeemable on, along with gift cards and digital content.

What happens if I return something I earned cash back on?

The cash back is reclaimed. If you have already spent it, Amazon deducts it from the refund as a "Points fee", so the refund arrives smaller than the purchase price.

How much cash back can I earn in a year?

$500 is the annual cap, with $100 the most from any single purchase. Both are published in Amazon's cash-back terms.
