What the Amazon student discount actually costs
Every figure, with the arithmetic shown rather than asserted - including the one that decides monthly versus annual.
The short answer
$7.49 a month or $69 a year, after a 6-month free trial. Annual is $20.88 cheaper over twelve months. A first year on the monthly plan costs $44.94 in total.
This should be the easiest question on the internet to answer, and it is startlingly badly served. One of the largest sites currently ranking for this search runs to over three thousand words without stating the $7.49 figure anywhere. Amazon states it plainly on its own signup page:

Monthly or annual? The arithmetic
This is the decision most people make by default at signup, and it is worth thirty seconds of thought because the gap is real:
- Monthly: $7.49 × 12 = $89.88 a year
- Annual: $69 a year
- Difference: annual saves $20.88, about six weeks of membership
Annual is cheaper, and the case for monthly is not price — it is flexibility. Take monthly if there is a realistic chance you will stop being eligible partway through the year, or if you are not yet sure you will keep it. Take annual once you know.
That is the student plan against itself. Against everything else Amazon sells, the annual student rate is the cheapest year of Prime there is — every Prime price, ranked by what twelve months cost, sets it beside Prime Access, regular Prime and the two plans that are not full Prime at all.

The costs that are not the membership fee
Two benefits get listed elsewhere as included when they are discounts on things you still pay for. Neither is hidden — Amazon describes both accurately — but they belong in a cost breakdown:
- Prime Video channels: $0.99 per month, per channel. Prime Video’s own catalog is included; channels are separate subscriptions.
- Amazon Music Unlimited: $5.99 per month. Amazon Music Prime, the smaller tier, is included.
Pointing the other way, two things genuinely included that offset the fee: 5% cash back (capped at $500 a year) and Grubhub+, which Amazon claims is worth $120 annually. The full benefit list, with the caveats.
Is it worth $7.49 a month?
At $69 a year, the membership costs about the price of one takeaway a month. The honest test is not whether that is a lot of money — it is whether you will use it:
- Order from Amazon monthly or more? Free fast delivery pays for it on its own.
- Would you pay for a streaming service anyway? Prime Video is included, so the membership substitutes for a cost you already carry.
- Order food delivery? Grubhub+ alone is plausibly worth more than the membership.
- None of the above? Then it is $69 a year for something you will use occasionally. Take the free trial, use it, and cancel before month 6.
