What Prime for Young Adults actually is

The widening is the part that matters and the part that gets lost. This is no longer a students-only program. Amazon's own eligibility sentence uses the word either:

So an 18-year-old who is not enrolled anywhere qualifies. A 24-year-old in a first job qualifies. A 30-year-old doing a masters qualifies, through the other route. The program covers considerably more people than its old name implied, and most of them have never checked.

The figures, in one table

Six free months valued at the post-trial rate comes to $44.94, and on the annual plans the discount is worth $70 a year against regular Prime. Both of those are arithmetic on Amazon's published figures rather than claims of our own — the full cost breakdown shows the working.

What you get

Full Prime benefits. Amazon's own signup wording is unambiguous about that: "18-24 year-olds and students enjoy full Prime benefits and 5% cash back Trial courtesy of Grubhub. After trial, auto-renews at $7.49/month. On eligible items. Terms apply."

In practice that means fast free delivery, Prime Video, Amazon Music, unlimited photo storage, Prime Gaming, grocery delivery in select cities, plus two things regular Prime is not presented with: 5% cash back on eligible items and an included Grubhub+ membership Amazon values at $120 a year.

There is one documented exception, and it is the only benefit that does not carry across: "Prime members can share certain benefits with another adult in their Amazon Household. Prime for Young Adults does not include Household sharing of Prime benefits." Why you cannot share this membership.

How you prove you qualify

Two routes, and you only need one of them.

• Age. Government ID — Amazon names passport, driving license, identity card. The age route in detail.
• Student. Complete and submit the sign-up form; Use your .edu email address; Submit proof of enrollment, such as your student ID or an official acceptance letter for the upcoming term. What counts as proof.

If you satisfy both, the one you choose sets your expiry date — and for most people under about 21 the age route runs several years longer. Work out which is which before you sign up; it is the most valuable two minutes in this program.

When it ends

On the route you verified under. Amazon publishes both conditions: "If you join Prime for Young Adults through [age] verification: when you reach 25 years old, your membership will convert to a normal Prime Membership." and "If you join Prime for Young Adults through [student] verification: after four years, or the end of your studies, your membership will convert to a normal Prime Membership."

The conversion is automatic and it is to full-price Prime. Amazon does give notice — "We'll notify you by email several weeks before your discounted Prime renewal date if we believe that you're no longer eligible for Prime for Young Adults." — but the notice only helps if you read it. Is it the same thing as Prime Student?

Yes. Same program, renamed, with eligibility widened to include 18-24 year-olds who are not enrolled. The old address amazon.com/primestudent still resolves — as an HTTP 301 redirect to amazon.com/amazonprime, checked August 21, 2026 — and the phrase "Prime Student" appeared 0 times in the visible markup of that landing page on the same day.

Which is why so many people conclude the program was discontinued. It was not. The evidence, in full, and what the rename actually changed.

Should you take it?

If you order from Amazon at all regularly, yes — delivery alone justifies $7.49 a month, and the trial costs nothing while you find out. If you order two or three times a term, probably not, and we would rather say so than sell you a membership you will resent in month seven.

Either way, sign up on the route that runs longer, and put the trial end date in a calendar the day you start. The first-week checklist is five items long and the first one is worth more than the rest combined.
