The trial converts to a paid membership automatically. That is not a trap, it is stated plainly by Amazon — but it is the mechanism behind almost every complaint about this program, and one calendar entry defuses it permanently.

1. Put the end date in a calendar. Today.

Find your renewal date in your account and create a reminder for a week before it. Not on the day — a week before, so you have time to decide rather than react.

This single action converts the biggest downside of the whole program into a scheduled decision you make deliberately. Where the renewal date lives and what it controls has the exact steps. 2. Turn on photo backup

Amazon Photos gives you "Enjoy unlimited full-resolution photo storage and 5GB for video storage." — but nothing gets backed up until you install the app and switch the setting on. It is the highest-value passive benefit on the list and the least-claimed, and doing it in week one means four years of photos rather than four years minus however long it takes you to remember. 3. Activate Grubhub+

Amazon's own claimed value for the included Grubhub+ membership is $120 a year, and it needs linking before it does anything. If you order food at all, this is the benefit most likely to exceed the cost of the membership on its own — and its terms carry Amazon's own qualifier, "Grubhub+ is free with Prime. 4. Find out where the cash back goes

The 5% cash back is not money off at checkout. It is a balance that appears "24 to 48 hours after delivery" and it comes with rules that quietly make small balances worthless: a $5 minimum to spend it and a 180-day expiry from when it is earned.

Knowing where the balance lives in week one is the difference between spending it and watching it expire. Finding and spending your cash back has the caps, the eligible categories and the exclusions in full.

5. Test the delivery speeds on your real address

Amazon's fastest delivery tiers are limited to eligible areas. Your term-time address either sits inside them or it does not, and that single fact decides whether the membership is worth paying for in month seven. Put something in a cart and read the estimate. Amazon also publishes its own list of perks members forget to use, and two of its eight behave differently on this plan. That list, checked against the young-adult plan and ranked, is the second pass once the first week is done.

Two things not to do

• Do not assume the trial is a free six months you can forget about. It converts automatically at the end. That is the deal, stated up front, and forgetting it is the only way it becomes a problem.
• Do not go looking for a student discount code. There is not one. The membership rate and the cash back are the discount, and every site offering you a code for this is offering something that does not exist.

The four-year version of the same checklist

Two entries, once a year. Check your renewal date each year, because the price and the plan can change and your route can expire. And if you are on the student route, expect Amazon to re-check your status: "We'll notify you by email several weeks before your discounted Prime renewal date if we believe that you're no longer eligible for Prime for Young Adults."
