Qualifying on age, without being a student

Amazon states it in one sentence: "If you're either a student or an 18-24 year-old, you're eligible for Prime for Young Adults." The word doing the work there is either. Two independent routes, and you only need one of them.

Why almost nobody knows this route exists

Because the program spent years being called Prime Student, and the entire internet wrote about it that way. The rename to Prime for Young Adults widened eligibility to any 18-24 year-old, and the search behavior never followed — people still type the old name at roughly seven times the rate of the new one.

The practical consequence: a 22-year-old working full time, who has never been near a campus, reads a page about a student discount, concludes it is not for them, and pays $14.99 a month instead of $7.49. That is a real amount of money lost to a naming problem. What the rename actually changed.

What Amazon accepts as proof of age

Three documents, named on Amazon's own page:

• Passport
• Driving license
• Identity card

That is a materially easier bar than the student route, which wants either a .edu address you can receive mail at or documentary proof of enrollment. If you happen to qualify on both, the age route is usually the faster one to get through. What the student route asks for.

The consequence of picking this route: your end date

This is the part that almost no other page mentions, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. The route you verify under decides when the discount stops.

So if you are 19 and also enrolled, the two routes give you genuinely different end dates: age carries you to 25, while the student route runs four years or to the end of your studies, whichever comes first. Work out which is longer for you before you pick. The full comparison of the two routes.

What you get is identical either way

The route affects verification and the end date. It does not affect the price or the benefits. Both routes get the 6-month trial, then $7.49 a month or $69 a year, with the same benefit list including 5% cash back and Grubhub+.

And both carry the same restriction: benefits from this membership cannot be shared. Why sharing is off the table.

Turning 25 soon

Amazon says it will warn you: "We'll notify you by email several weeks before your discounted Prime renewal date if we believe that you're no longer eligible for Prime for Young Adults." That email arrives several weeks before the renewal date, which is enough time to decide whether you want regular Prime at $14.99 or want out.
