Note the word "eligible" — Amazon is committing to process a refund where one is due, not promising a full one in every case. That is a meaningful distinction and we are not going to paper over it. The full switching walkthrough.

The order that protects the refund

1. Do not cancel your existing Prime membership. This is the step people get wrong, and it is the only one that is irreversible.
2. Sign up for the discounted membership on the same account.
3. Let Amazon process the refund for the previous membership afterwards.

Cancel first and you have voluntarily ended the membership the refund would have applied to. The instinct to "clean up before switching" is exactly wrong here, and it is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this whole program.

What Amazon does not commit to

Being precise about the gaps matters as much as quoting the commitment. Amazon's help pages for this program do not state:

• Whether canceling mid-month refunds the unused part. No rule is published on the pages we track.
• Whether canceling mid-year on the $69 annual plan produces a partial refund, or how it would be calculated.
• What happens to a payment taken the day before a cancellation.
• How a mid-cycle plan switch is prorated. Switching plans.

Plenty of pages state confident answers to all four. They are describing general Amazon refund behavior, not a rule published for this program, and the difference matters when you are the one out of pocket. Why we publish what we do not know.

The refund-adjacent rule that does exist

Amazon's cash-back terms publish one thing that behaves like a reverse refund and catches people out: if you return an item you earned cash back on, the cash back is reclaimed — and if you have already spent it, it is deducted from the refund as a "Points fee".

So a return can produce a refund smaller than the purchase price, for a reason that looks like an error and is not. How the cash back works.

What to do when you think a refund is owed

1. Check your renewal date and the charge date. Half of disputed charges are simply a renewal nobody had noted. Finding your renewal date.
2. Check which membership you are on. A charge of $14.99 rather than $7.49 means a conversion happened, not an overcharge. Checking your status.
3. Then contact Amazon. Only Amazon can see the account state and only Amazon can issue a refund. No third-party page can resolve this, including this one.

That third point is not a brush-off. It is the accurate answer, and it is more useful than a page pretending to know what your account will be offered.

The thing that prevents most refund questions

Knowing the trial end date. The single most common "I want a refund" situation on this membership is a trial that auto-renewed while nobody was watching — Amazon says on its own signup page that it does exactly that, at $7.49 a month.
