That sentence is the single most important one on Amazon's signup page and it is the one nobody reads. It is why this site puts the auto-renewal disclosure on every page that mentions the trial rather than in a footnote. What the trial actually commits you to.

When the first charge lands

At the end of the trial period, not at signup. Six months from the day you start, your chosen plan begins billing:

What the published price does not include

Sales tax. Amazon publishes $7.49 and $69 as the membership fees, and what you actually pay depends on your state and local rate. We are not going to quote a tax-inclusive figure, because there is no single correct one and inventing an average would be worse than saying this.

So budget for slightly more than the headline number. Whether that is a few cents or nearly a dollar a month depends entirely on where you are. Your first charge is the authoritative answer for your address.

What we cannot tell you about payment methods

• Which card types are accepted for a membership. Amazon does not enumerate this on the pages that define this program.
• Whether a prepaid or debit card will work for the trial specifically.
• Whether a gift-card balance can pay a membership fee. What Amazon does publish, in its cash-back terms, is that cash back is not redeemable on Prime membership fees — which is a different question, and a useful hint about how it treats membership charges.

The three dates worth writing down

1. Trial start. The day you sign up. Six months from here is when charging begins.
2. Trial end. The first charge date. Set a reminder a week before, so a decision to continue is a decision rather than a default.
3. Renewal date. Once you are paying, this is the date the membership renews and the date Amazon works backwards from when it warns you about eligibility. How to find it.

If you are switching from an existing Prime membership

The billing works differently and in your favor. Amazon states you do not need to cancel first, and that it will process any eligible refund for the previous membership once you are enrolled. Canceling first is what forfeits that. The switching walkthrough.
