That is a genuinely useful piece of information even though it is not the one you searched for, because it closes off the loop people try first: earning cash back and using it to pay for the membership. Amazon rules that out explicitly.

The three separate questions

The third question — whether buying gift cards earns cash back — is answered by the category list rather than by a gift-card rule. Amazon's five categories are Beauty, Apparel, Electronics, Personal Care, Personal Computers, and gift cards are not a product category in that sense.

Why we will not guess at this one

Payment-method rules are exactly the kind of fact that looks stable and is not. They vary by product, by account and by time, and a wrong answer here does not cost you a small inconvenience — it costs you a failed signup at the moment you were trying to start a membership.

What we can tell you about paying for the membership

• A valid payment method is required to start the 6-month trial, even though nothing is charged during it — because the trial auto-renews.
• The first charge lands at the end of the trial, at $7.49 monthly or $69 annually.
• Sales tax is on top of those published fees, and varies by state and locality.
• There is no cancellation fee at any point.

If someone wants to give you the membership

The thing to know is that this membership is tied to your eligibility. It is not a product someone can buy for you — you have to verify as 18-24 or as a higher-education student on your own account.

And it cannot be shared onward. Amazon states that benefits received through Prime for Young Adults cannot be shared, so there is no configuration where one person's membership covers another. Why sharing is off the table.
