This page exists because "Prime Student" is searched far more often than "Prime for Young Adults", and a meaningful number of eligible people concluded the program ended when the name changed. It did not; it got wider. What the rename means. If the student in your life is 18-24 or enrolled in higher education, and has never used the trial, this is the gift.

What Amazon says is inside the free months

Amazon is unusually specific about the trial, and unusually honest about its limits. Its own note: "If you sign up for the $0 trial, you won't have access to certain Prime benefits during the trial." It then lists what is included during the trial:

• Unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows through Prime Video
• Unlimited ad-free access to Prime Music
• Unlimited photo storage through Prime Photos
• Student-exclusive offers
• Access to free games on Prime Gaming
• A Twitch channel subscription for one month

Amazon does not list which benefits are withheld, so neither does this site. The trial page covers the gap honestly. Of the list above, the two a student notices first are free fast delivery and Prime Video; the one they notice never is the photo storage, which is worth more than it sounds to someone with four years of a phone camera to back up.

The three dates that keep it free

A free trial is designed to become a paid membership; Amazon says so on the signup page: "18-24 year-olds and students enjoy full Prime benefits and 5% cash back Trial courtesy of Grubhub. After trial, auto-renews at $7.49/month. On eligible items. Terms apply." The site's guide to how free trials are designed turns that into three dates. As a gift, write them down for the student:

1. The start date. The day they sign up. Everything else is counted from it.
2. The decision date. About a week before the trial ends — the day to decide whether the last six months justified $7.49 a month. Judging a trial while you are in it.
3. The renewal date. 6 months from the start. If nothing is done, the first charge lands here. Where Amazon shows it.

One rule makes the decision date matter more than usual: the trial is one-time. Amazon states that a member who cancels and later reinstates "If you decide to reinstate your membership, you'll no longer be eligible for the Prime for Young Adults trial membership." So "cancel now and restart later" is not available. Canceling before the first charge, if that is the decision.

Other free gifts worth more than they sound

• The library, genuinely. The site's textbook guide ranks five ways to get a course text, and the library is first. A student who has not tried the reserve desk has not tried the cheapest option.
• An hour of the subscription audit. Thirty minutes, once a term, and the most common result is finding a second charge for something already included in the first.
• The timing note. If the student has not started the trial yet, the free gift includes telling them when: when the orders begin, so the six months cover a term rather than a summer.

What to check before you send them the link

• Are they eligible? 18-24 by age, or enrolled in higher education. Both routes are open to graduate and part-time students; the eligibility page has the detail.
• Have they used it before? One-time. A second signup goes straight to the paid rate.
• Do they get Prime through a family share now? They will lose the share by switching — Amazon states young-adult benefits cannot be shared — and gain a membership at half the price. Usually worth it, but it is their call. Sharing vs your own membership.
