Graduating young, and the route you did not use

Be clear about what this page is and is not. Both quotes below are published by Amazon. What Amazon does not publish is a procedure for moving between routes, so we are not going to describe one — our rule on that. What we can do is set out the position precisely enough that you can ask the right question.

Who this affects

The top three rows are the interesting ones, and they describe a large share of graduates. Amazon's own eligibility sentence is "If you're either a student or an 18-24 year-old, you're eligible for Prime for Young Adults" — the word doing the work is either, and it is a statement about who is eligible rather than about which route you happened to tick two years ago.

What Amazon publishes about the wind-down

Two things, and both are useful here. It gives notice before it converts you: "We'll notify you by email several weeks before your discounted Prime renewal date if we believe that you're no longer eligible for Prime for Young Adults." And the conversion itself is to a normal Prime membership at $14.99 a month, which is double what you have been paying.

That notice email is your window. It arrives weeks in advance, which is enough time to ask Amazon directly whether your age still qualifies you rather than discovering the new rate on a statement. What to actually do

1. Find your renewal date now, before graduation rather than after. Where it lives.
2. Watch for the eligibility notice. Amazon says it emails several weeks before the renewal date when it believes you no longer qualify.
3. Ask Amazon whether the age condition still applies to you, quoting your date of birth. This is a question for Amazon and nobody else — no third-party page can answer it for your account.
4. If the answer is no, decide deliberately. Full-price Prime at $14.99 a month is a real cost. What the alternatives are, and how to cancel cleanly if it is not worth it.

Step three is the whole point of the page. Most people in this position never ask, because every article they read told them the student discount ends at graduation — which is true of the student route and says nothing about the other one.

If you are reading this before you sign up

Then you can avoid the whole situation. Verifying on age rather than as a student gives most 18-24 year-olds a longer run — to your 25th birthday rather than four years or graduation — and it removes graduation from the equation altogether.

Work out which route runs longer for you. It is a two-minute calculation with several years of discount riding on it, and it is the single most under-covered decision in this program.

What we cannot tell you

Whether Amazon will move an existing membership from one route to the other, what evidence it would ask for, or whether re-joining under the age route is treated as a new membership. None of that is published on the pages we verify against, and the trial is one-time — which is the specific reason not to cancel first and re-join on a hunch.
