This is the one category where the cash back is worth real money - and the one where the per-purchase cap bites hardest.
The short answer
Electronics and Personal Computers are two of the five categories Amazon names for 5% cash back — so laptops, monitors and accessories genuinely earn. The catch is the $100 per-purchase cap: on anything above 2,000 dollars, the effective rate falls below 5%.

That cap is published by Amazon and almost never mentioned elsewhere, which matters precisely because laptops are the purchase most likely to hit it.
What the cap does to a real purchase

So the cap only binds above 2,000 dollars, which most student laptop purchases stay under. It is worth knowing rather than worth worrying about — unless you are buying a workstation, in which case splitting a purchase across accessories and machine may be worth a thought.

How the calculation actually works
- On the final price after discounts. A $900 laptop reduced to $700 earns 5% of $700, not of $900.
- Excluding shipping fees and taxes. The cash back is on the item, not on the total you pay.
- Only on badged items. Eligible products carry a badge on search and detail pages. Check for it before assuming a category match is enough.
- Paid 24 to 48 hours after delivery, then expiring 180 days later.
That last point is the one to plan around when buying a laptop in September: the resulting cash back has to be spent by roughly the following spring, and it needs a $5 balance to be usable at all. On a laptop purchase you will comfortably clear that minimum.

The returns trap on expensive purchases
Worth knowing before you buy a laptop rather than after. If you return an item you earned cash back on, Amazon reclaims the cash back — and if you have already spent it, deducts it from the refund as a "Points fee".

Buying for four years rather than one
The cash back is a small optimization compared with buying something that lasts. 5% of a laptop price is 5%; replacing a machine two years early costs far more than that.
