The Prime shipping-only plan, and why students should skip it

The searches — "Amazon Prime shipping only", "Prime delivery only membership" — come from people who want the boxes and not the streaming. Amazon does sell that, but only to customers it invites, and at a price that gives no saving over the full membership. Here is what Amazon itself says the plan is.

What the plan keeps, and what it drops

Amazon publishes a benefit-by-benefit comparison table for the two plans. These are its rows, in its order and wording:

So the plan is not stripped down to delivery alone — Grubhub+, Whole Foods member deals and Prime Day access all stay. What goes is everything you stream, play or store. The young-adult membership sits on the "Amazon Prime" side of that table: Amazon describes it as "full Prime benefits", with one documented exception, Household sharing.

The price: identical to full Prime by the month

Amazon's fee page gives the shipping-only plan a monthly price and no annual one. On the published figures, then, it never undercuts full Prime: a year of it is $40.88 more than regular Prime's annual plan, and $110.88 more than a year of the young-adult plan. If you are ever invited, that is the comparison to make before accepting.

Invitation only: why you may never see it

Amazon's two descriptions agree: the plan is "Invitation only" on the fee page, and "only available for a limited time only to eligible customers" on the comparison page. It does not publish who is eligible or how invitations are chosen, and neither do we — any page telling you how to "unlock" it is guessing. There is no sign-up link for it on Amazon's Prime pages, which is consistent with it being offered rather than sold.

If delivery really is all you want

Then the question is whether any membership beats paying for shipping order by order. That depends on how often you order, and the break-even against no membership works it through with the real figures. What the young-adult rate changes is the threshold: at $7.49 a month the membership pays for itself on far fewer orders than it does at $14.99.

And the delivery side of Prime is the part with conditions attached. Amazon's Prime Terms: "Prime shipping benefits depend upon inventory availability, order deadlines, delivery speed selected, and in some cases the shipping address." That holds on every plan, shipping-only included. Every delivery benefit, with its conditions.

The short version

• 18-24 or enrolled: take Prime for Young Adults. It costs half as much and keeps everything the shipping plan drops.
• Receiving assistance: Prime Access at $6.99 is full Prime for less than half the shipping-only price. Which programs count.
• Everyone else, invited: regular Prime's annual plan at $139 is cheaper over a year than shipping-only at $14.99 a month, and includes streaming.
• Not invited: there is nothing to do. The plan is not on open sale.
